About the museum
The water tower was built in 1914 for the town's water supply, at the same time as an oil-fired power station that drove the pumps. Water collected in the reservoir at the top of the tower and from there flowed through the network to the homes of Brežice. In 1983 the tower was disconnected from the water network; today it is the only water tower in Slovenia that is fully accessible to visitors.
The tower is cylindrical and 46 metres high. During the renovation its interior was arranged over eight levels (basement, ground floor and six upper floors), where original objects, replicas and modern technologies present stories of technical progress, love, and the connection of nature and culture. The viewpoint in the former reservoir offers a view of Brežice and its surroundings; it can be reached by stairs or by lift.
Next to the tower stands a pavilion, which houses the reception, an information point, a souvenir shop and a café. The building is managed by the Posavski muzej Brežice; the owner is the Municipality of Brežice. According to legend, eight wooden hearts on the rim of the reservoir commemorate the unrequited love of a high-ranking official.
