Galerija Mijo Kovačić

About the museum

The Galerija Mijo Kovačić opened in June 2018, when the 50th anniversary of the Galerija naivne umjetnosti in Hlebine was being celebrated. It was founded by the artist, the Zaklada Mijo Kovačić, the City of Koprivnica and the Muzej grada Koprivnice. It is located on the ground floor of the Galerija Koprivnica building, in a converted former city café.

Mijo Kovačić was born on 5 August 1935 in Gornja Šuma, began painting as a boy and first exhibited in Koprivnica in 1954.

The permanent display covers 135 m² and includes some 40 works from the 1970s to the present: oils on glass and wood, sketches and drawings, and an unfinished painting that shows how a picture on glass is made. The themes are water (flooded fields, marshes, fishermen), stylised human figures and winter landscapes with large empty snowfields.
