About the museum
The Mirabela Fortress, also known as Peovica, stands above the old town of Omiš at an altitude of more than 200 metres. It was built in the 13th century and served as a lookout from which the Brač Channel was watched, so that rich merchant ships and hostile galleys could not pass Omiš unnoticed. According to tradition, during an Ottoman attack in the 16th century, the defenders on its summit shouted and fired so loudly towards the Cetina canyon that the echo gave the impression of a much larger army, and the attackers gave up.
A lightning strike in 1988 nearly destroyed the top of the fortress down to its foundations, but the restorers gathered all the pieces and, through a long restoration, returned it to its original form. Today Mirabela is a fortress with four floors and a lookout from which almost the whole old part of Omiš, the Brač Channel and nearby Duće can be seen. It is easiest reached by the street beside the Church of the Holy Spirit (sv. Duh) inside the old town; the climb to the top takes about ten minutes on foot.
