About the museum
The Tvrđava Lovrjenac (Lovrjenac fortress) rises on a 37 m high rock in the Pile suburb and takes its name from the Church of St Lawrence (Sv. Lovre) that once stood here; the chapel is built into the body of the fortress. Its origins date to the years between 1018 and 1038, and the earliest surviving mention dates from 1301. Over the centuries it was strengthened and extended: in 1464 the western and northern walls were considerably reinforced, and in the 16th and 17th centuries it took on its present form. It was damaged in the great earthquake of 1667. After the fall of the Republic of Ragusa, Austria converted it into a barracks; in the Second World War it served as a prison, and after the war it was cleaned and repaired. Today Lovrjenac is known for the inscription carved above the entrance door: “Non bene pro toto libertas venditur auro”.
