About the museum
The Arnold Villa was built in 1862 to a design by the builder Josef Arnold as a suburban summer residence on the slope above Lužánky. The layout, with the bay-window salon, dining room and the tower above the staircase, has survived almost unchanged. After twenty years the villa was sold and changed hands several times. The last private owner was Cecilie Hože, who in 1909 had the villa rebuilt in a late Art Nouveau geometric style with elements anticipating Art Deco.
Cecilie Hože was the sister of Alfred Löw-Beer, whose daughter Greta and her husband Fritz Tugendhat had the famous functionalist villa built next door, to a design by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. The gardens of all three villas were connected. During the war the family was persecuted: the Gestapo seized the villa, and Cecilie Hože died in Terezín in 1942.
After the war the villa was under state administration and between 1951 and 2012 served as a kindergarten; because of structural defects it faced demolition. The administration was taken over by the Brno City Museum, which began a comprehensive reconstruction in December 2021 with support from the EEA and Norway Grants. The villa and the extensive garden were completed in spring 2024.
Today the villa offers a permanent exhibition on the architecture and the story of its last Jewish owners, guided tours, the Cecilie Café and a Dialogue Centre focused on Czech-German-Jewish dialogue.
