About the museum

The Museum of Romani Culture was founded in 1991 on the initiative of Romani intellectuals. Initially it operated as a non-state, non-profit organisation, and from the start it concentrated mainly on building collections that document the tangible and intangible culture of the Roma. Since 2005 it has been a state contributory organisation of the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic.

The collection now numbers more than 28,000 objects, divided into five sub-collections and fourteen collection funds. They document traditional crafts and occupations, housing and household equipment, clothing and jewellery, visual art, written materials and posters, sound, photo and video recordings, and the image of the Roma in the eyes of the majority society. The museum library and reading room are also available to researchers.

The museum is housed in a three-storey building on Bratislavská Street in Brno. The permanent exhibition The Story of the Roma occupies the first floor and leads visitors chronologically through six halls: from the original homeland in India, through the arrival in Europe and settlement, the Roma Holocaust and the post-war years, to the portrayal of the Roma in the media after 1989.

In 2018 the museum took over the administration of the memorials at Lety u Písku and Hodonín u Kunštátu, and in 2019 the villa on Velvarská Street in Prague, where a Prague centre for Roma and Sinti is being created. Besides exhibitions and educational programmes, the museum holds concerts, lectures and commemorative events.
