About the museum
Villa Tugendhat was built in 1929–1930 by the German architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe for the couple Greta and Fritz Tugendhat. The house is unique for its pure architectural form, its setting in a natural framework and the interplay of its spaces, but also for its technical and structural solutions and its fine materials. It is an icon of Brno’s modern architecture and the main work of its architect.
In 2001 the villa was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as the only monument of modern architecture in the Czech Republic. In 2010–2012 it underwent heritage conservation and restoration, which returned it to the appearance it had when completed in 1930.
Today the house is run by the Brno City Museum. Tours lead through the bedroom floor with its terrace, the main living space and the technical floor with ventilation, boiler room, laundry and photographic darkroom. On the technical floor there is a permanent exhibition with original furniture from the villa of the 1930s and with photographic and text materials. The garden and these spaces are freely accessible without a guide during opening hours.
