About the museum
The puppet museum is part of the Radost Theatre, which has operated in Brno as a professional stage for children and young people since 1949. The theatre was founded on the initiative of Vladimír Matoušek in the former Orania cinema building on Bratislavská street, and puppet art remains one of its main themes to this day.
The museum, located in the so-called Loď (Ship), was built as an extension to the theatre; the design was by the architect Oldřich Prokeš of the AAA studio, and the main building material is wood. The building's shape recalls the bow of a ship setting out from the theatre complex towards Cejl street. The museum opened to the public on 7 June 2011.
The exhibition shows puppets from productions that the theatre has staged from the 1950s to the present, and explains how puppet art developed at Radost and which techniques, materials and visual styles were used. The exhibits are rotated. The museum also serves as a space for exhibitions and chamber performances for small puppets.
