About the museum
The Merkur metal construction kit has been produced in Police nad Metují since 1920, and the town remains closely linked with it to this day. The museum that commemorates its history has operated in Police since 2006. Its exhibition has been undergoing a comprehensive redevelopment since 2021.
On display are the oldest construction kits from 1920 and the largest structure ever built from Merkur, the so-called Ocelové město (Steel City), inspired by Jules Verne’s novel and listed in the Guinness Book of Records. Visitors can also see a large Merkur “O” model railway layout at a scale of 1 : 45, a model of the Petřín Lookout Tower and other models.
Since 2021, the basement has housed an exhibition on mining technology, for example the Jindřich mine, a blast furnace and the K 800 mining excavator. In 2025 the exhibition was expanded to include seventy-year-old machines on which Merkur was once manufactured.
