About the museum

The Bangsbo Museum was founded in 1946 and is based in the old main estate of Bangsbo on the southwestern edge of Frederikshavn, first documented in 1364. The main building, also called "Den Hvide Gård" (the White Farm), lies in a wooded valley with a park, botanical garden, rock garden, and deer enclosure.

Around 1900 the estate belonged to the bon vivant Johan Knudsen, who gathered writers and painters around him; Herman Bang also frequented the so-called Bangsbo Circle. The exhibition in the main building is devoted to life on the estate in that period.

In the former farm buildings, the museum shows maritime history. The showpiece is the Ellingå ship of 1163: discovered in 1922 during the construction of a railway bridge northwest of the town, covered over again, located once more in 1963, and recovered in 1968, it was conserved for years and has been on display since 1972. Added to this are the Voersåroret from the 10th century, figureheads, ship models, and marine archaeological finds from strandings off the North Jutland coast. A labyrinth-style exhibition tells of the German occupation 1940–1945 and the Resistance.

In 2009 the house merged with the museums in Sæby and Skagen to form Nordjyllands Kystmuseum and has since been called Kystmuseet Bangsbo.
