About the museum

Sognefogedgården is an old farm of the "parallelgård" type and the last surviving farm of the former village of Vester-Flade, which today lies within the city limits of Frederikshavn. It is first reliably mentioned in 1713; since the ground beneath the farm was never cultivated, it may be far older. For a long time it was a tenant farm of the manor Knivholt.

The last owner, Peter Munk, lived very frugally and died in 1990, unmarried and without heirs. The farm was preserved almost unchanged with all its furnishings and today looks as it did around 1900 – visitors are meant to feel as if the residents had just stepped outside for a moment.

Today the farm is a local museum run exclusively by volunteers. On guided tours of the farmhouse and barn, the volunteers tell anecdotes about Peter Munk and the lives of ordinary people from Frederikshavn. Chickens and ducks roam freely in the farmyard, and horses graze in the pasture.

The museum is dementia-friendly and offers memory boxes for seniors as well as lessons and tours for schools, plus walks to the vanished villages of Øster- and Vester-Flade.
