Voergaard Slot
Renaissance castle in Vendsyssel with a wide moat and a collection of French art and furniture, visitable by guided tour only.
About the museum
The origins of Voergaard go back to the late Middle Ages; the oldest part of the complex is dated to 1481. In 1510, the estate passed to Stygge Krumpen, the last Catholic bishop of Børglum. During the Count's Feud, peasants under Skipper Clement seized the estate, and with the Reformation it fell to the Crown.
In 1578, King Frederik II transferred Voergaard to Karen Krabbe. Her daughter Ingeborg Skeel had the Renaissance house built, which was completed in 1588; the sandstone portal is said to have originally been intended for Frederiksborg Castle. Ingeborg Skeel was regarded by her tenants as a harsh mistress and lives on to this day as the castle ghost in the stories of the house. Later, Voergaard belonged to, among others, the Scavenius family, including foreign minister Erik Scavenius.
In 1955, the Danish-French count Ejnar Oberbech-Clausen bought the castle and brought an extensive collection of French furniture, paintings, and art objects from his wife's families. After his death in 1963, Voergaard passed to a family foundation, which has maintained the castle ever since and has been restoring it extensively for some years. Visitors experience the halls and salons on guided tours; the park and castle cellar are freely accessible during opening hours.
