About the museum

The Narva-Jõesuu Koduloomuuseum is located in a former summer house where, in the 1930s, the family of the writer A. H. Tammsaare stayed and where the writer himself spent summer days. The museum was founded in 1992 and for more than 25 years remained almost unchanged, appealing above all to visitors from the Russian-language cultural space who came for nostalgia. Afterwards the museum began to renew itself and welcomed visitors in the 2020 summer season.

The museum presents the past of the Narva-Jõesuu resort: summer guests, carved wooden houses and villas that were once well known throughout the region. In 1932 the newspaper Päevaleht wrote that there were more than six hundred summer houses, and the resort had hydrotherapy establishments, a kursaal and a beach. Much of that period’s building stock has since disappeared.

The museum offers educational programmes for schools (for example on the ornaments of Narva-Jõesuu and tea drinking at the resort) and excursions around Narva-Jõesuu and the area.
