About the museum
The art gallery of the Narva Museum is in an old storehouse barn built in 1777 on the Gloria bastion. It is one of the few buildings of the Old Town that survived the devastating events of the Second World War. The first exhibition opened in 1991 in the restored building, which was redesigned specially for the museum, and that day is regarded as the birthday of the art gallery, which operates as a branch of the Narva Museum.
The gallery currently presents exhibitions of Estonian and Narva artistic heritage and of professional contemporary art and visual culture. In 2021 the permanent exhibition “Elu või karma? Narva lood” (Life or Karma? Stories of Narva), curated on the basis of the museum’s art collection, opened, showing nearly 200 works from the Baroque era to the present. The exhibition also includes materials from the museum’s photo and textile collections, and a smart-device audio guide makes it easier to explore the permanent exhibition.
The gallery pays particular attention to the mediation of exhibitions. Educational programmes are offered for kindergarten children and pupils of general schools, family days and excursions are organised, and art evenings for adults. For children there are city summer camps and traditional events, for example Artist’s Day and the Museum Night.
