About the museum
The permanent exhibition building of the Prangli saarte muuseum (Prangli Islands Museum) opened on 19 June 2009 in Lääneotsa village, in the yard of Vanani farm, on the initiative of the Prangli Saare Talurahvamuuseumi Selts (Prangli Island Peasant Museum Society). Since 2006 the society has collected objects and information about the history, culture, customs, work and people of Prangli and Aksi (Väike-Prangli).
The peasant museum exhibition shows the everyday life of the coastal people: fishing nets, sealers’ skis, and household goods ranging from paraffin lamps to butter barrels. Rare objects include powder horns, several hundred-year-old sailing-ship blocks, a sailor’s clothes chest from 1778, and glass and porcelain tableware.
The natural history museum opened on 21 July 2012. It presents the natural communities of Prangli and Aksi: bird species nesting on the island, protected plants, the erratic boulders Punane kivi (Red Stone) and Kotkakivi (Eagle Stone), and the traditions of seal hunting and bird hunting. The display includes more than thirty stuffed animals and birds, among them a red fox. In Lääneotsa village, in the yard of Mardi farm, there is also an open-air exhibition with ancient net sheds. The museum is a private museum and is open during the tourist season.
