About the museum
The Rootsi-Kallavere Küla Muuseum is located in the restored threshing-barn undercroft of Käspre farm. It was founded by the MTÜ Rootsi-Kallavere Küla Selts (Rootsi-Kallavere Village Society), and the museum was solemnly opened in May 2006. The village has been known in written sources since 1241, and the museum is closely linked with the everyday life of the villagers.
The exhibition shows village life before the Second World War: milk-carrying carts and milk vessels, tsarist-era measures for farm produce, flax-processing and beating tools, fishing equipment, shoemaking tools, local handicrafts and fine white linen clothing from the early 20th century. In the old threshing-barn undercroft of Mihkli farm there is a weaving room, where rugs are made in winter, and an exhibition on fishing and seafaring.
