About the museum
The Ruhnu Museum was founded in 1990, and the present permanent exhibition opened in 1998. The exhibition contains about 300 objects used by the island’s residents at work and in everyday life, as well as photographs and texts on the island’s history and nature. Among the rarer exhibits are quartz tools up to eight thousand years old used for seal hunting, a dragon-headed weathervane (1644) from the wooden church, and a seal rifle made by the Swedish-speaking native inhabitants.
The museum is run by the Foundation Rannarootsi Muuseum (Museum of the Coastal Swedes). The museum includes the nearly two-century-old Korsi farm, the last surviving typical farmstead of the Ruhnu Swedes on Ruhnu; its distinctive features are the foundationless long house and the hipped roof. The farm is being restored.
