About the museum
Tiibetin taiteen keskus is a museum and cultural centre for Tibetan art in the Dharmakeskus (Dharma Centre) at Alastaro. The Dharma Centre was founded in 1980 by composer, musician, visual artist and meditation teacher Pekka Airaksinen (1945–2019). The art centre opened to the public on 9 June 2017 and is run by the association Perinneyhdistys muinaismieliset ry.
Airaksinen began assembling the collection in 1974. Around 200 works were acquired, mainly in Nepal and to a small extent in India. The collection includes thangka paintings, statues, ritual objects, musical instruments and jewellery. The statues are mainly gilded bronze, and the thangkas are painted on cotton fabric, some with gold leaf.
The centre also offers guided meditation, yoga and singing bowl relaxation sessions as well as music events.
