About the museum
The Loimaa local heritage museum operates in a natural-stone grain storehouse on the church hill of Kanta-Loimaa, completed in 1855, which was once the municipal loan granary. The Manttaalikunta of Loimaa (rural district) handed the building over to Loimaa-Seura for museum use in 1955, and the museum opened to the public in 1966.
The museum’s collection has been built through voluntary work and donations, and it comprises over 6,000 objects. The permanent exhibition is spread over three floors: on the ground floor there is an old pirtti (main room), and the exhibition moves from bread, housework and farming to craft trades and their tools. The top floor has textiles, vessels, toys and material relating to local Finnish history. The permanent exhibitions have recently been renewed.
The museum is run by Loimaa-Seura ry, which also looks after the school, mill and smithy museums.
