About the museum

Several factory villages arose along the Kymi River at the end of the 19th century. In 1872 the first wood-grinding mill was built at Lohisaari in Ankkapurha. The Ankkapurhan teollisuusmuseo, also called the factory museum, is now located on the same site in the old cardboard factory. The museum opened to the public in 1997.

The museum presents more than 150 years of history of the present Stora Enso Anjalankoski mills and the factory community, as well as the working and living conditions of the staff. The core of the museum is the Pahvimankeli (Cardboard Machine), Finland's first continuously operating cardboard machine. The machine started in 1897, served in production for over 80 years and was permanently shut down in 1978. It is also Finland's oldest cardboard machine preserved in its original location.

The exhibitions present the stages of factory history through hundreds of photographs. On display are the milestones of the factories, the everyday life of the workers and the development of the factory community, as well as a comprehensive overview of the events of 1918 and their impact on the local factory community. The museum also provides information about the Alvar Aalto sites in the area.
