About the museum
The buildings of Puolakka once formed an almost enclosed yard: the tupa (main room) dates from the 1700s, the storehouses from the early 1800s and the other yard buildings from the early 1900s. The last residents of the farm were four unmarried siblings, the last of whom, Otto Puolakka, died in 1957. The property was bought for use as a museum in 1962. The museum stood empty from 2012 until a private buyer acquired it at the start of 2020, and it reopened to the public in June 2020. The Kymi River, visible from the farm museum, was once the border between Russia and Sweden.
