About the museum
The local heritage museum project, which grew out of the museum section of a parish exhibition held in Pyhäjoki in 1957, was realised in 1963, when Annalan kotiseutumuseo opened to the public. Over the years Annala has grown into one of the largest local heritage museum areas in Northern Finland. In the inventory carried out by the Northern Ostrobothnia Museum in 2005–2006, it was classified as a site of national significance.
The history of the Annala farm goes back to the 16th and 17th centuries. The farm was run by, among others, parish clerk Erik Zimmermann and cantor Tuomas Cannelin, and the large farm passed into municipal ownership in the 1930s. The site once housed a municipal office and, in the early 1960s, a municipal middle school.
The museum area has 22 buildings and around 8,000 objects. They include the Annala house, completed in 1867, the Cannelin house from the early 19th century, a windmill built in 1812, a threshing barn, a soldier’s croft, granaries, a smoke sauna, a smithy, a boathouse and the renkkusilta bridge that once led across the Pyhäjoki. The museum’s main task is to present rural life before the era of the tractor.
