About the museum
The Kruununmakasiinimuseo (Crown Granary Museum) operates in Raahe’s so-called new crown granary at Merikatu 10. The brick granary was designed by the architect Ernst Bernhard Lohrman and completed in 1852. The building served as a grain store until 1910, after which the armed forces used it as the main store of the Raahe military district until 1993. The City of Raahe rented the granary as a cold storage space for the museum in 1995 and bought it from the state in 2001.
The building was thoroughly renovated for museum use in the early 2010s, and it received exhibition and work spaces as well as suitable storage for the museum’s collections. The Kruununmakasiinimuseo opened to the public on 21 October 2012, when the Raahe Museum celebrated its 150th anniversary.
The permanent exhibition presents highlights of the history of Raahe from prehistory to the present day. Among the exhibits are the Stone Age giant’s churches (jätinkirkot), the early stages of the town, the glory years of the sailing ship era, and the transformation of the town from a rural village into an industrial city. The museum is open all year round.
