About the museum
Soveliuksen talo stands in Raahe along Rantakatu, right next to the Pakkahuone museum. It was built in the 1780s and is the oldest surviving residential building in Raahe, representing a typical 18th-century burgher house. The two-storey house stands on a high stone foundation, and its floor plan is the characteristic Carolean type of the period: behind a wide entrance hall is the sali (hall), with two kamari (chambers) on either side.
The Raahe museum leased the house from the Soveliuksen sukusäätiö (Soveliuksen family foundation) in 1990. After surface treatment studies, the upper floor was restored in the style of the 1890s and the lower floor in the style of the early 20th century. The museum’s office is in the Art Nouveau rooms on the ground floor.
The upper floor houses the interior museum Laivapatruunin koti, which presents the prosperous home of a shipowning merchant of the 1890s, with its furniture, small objects and ship paintings. In summer the home is explored on guided tours, and before Christmas the house hosts Porvariskodin joulu (Christmas in a Burgher’s Home).
