About the museum
Pharmacy activity in Raahe began in 1793, when the apothecary Jean Galenius founded the first pharmacy in the town. From at least 1820 the main pharmacy operated on Kirkkokatu, opposite the town church, and in 1924 the pharmacy moved to its present location on Kauppakatu. There the pharmacy operated until 1998.
The pharmacists Väinö and Paavo Mäkinen preserved the pharmacy's unique old collection of objects. In spring 1999 the City of Raahe acquired the collection and at the same time rented the pharmacy premises, so that the objects could be preserved and shown in an authentic setting. The entrance is guarded by the same eagle that previously sat above the porch of the Kirkkokatu pharmacy, and the furnishings of the Kirkkokatu pharmacy, renewed in 1900, were moved to the new premises.
The collection includes wooden herb drawers from the early days of the pharmacy, hundreds of medicine bottles from various centuries, the oldest of them from the 18th century, equipment needed for preparing medicines, ceramic herb jars and sales packages from the 19th century. Many of the jars still contain old medicinal substances.
