About the museum
The Artjärvi Local Heritage Museum is located next to the Ratula manor, north of Lake Villikkalanjärvi, and is considered the oldest local heritage museum in Päijät-Häme. The plot for the house museum area was donated in 1923 by the then owners of Ratula manor, Gustaf Alexander and Märtha Rotkirch. The museum is run by the Artjärven kotiseutuyhdistys (Artjärvi Local Heritage Association).
The museum area brings together a traditional farmyard of buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries. The main building was built in 1757 and moved here from the village of Sääksjärvi in Iitti; the wood carvings on its doors and window frames are particularly skilful. The area also has the Piilopirtti (hideaway cottage), which served as the manor master's study and where school objects are displayed, and a pärepaviljonki (pavilion) which Alexander Armfelt had built in 1844 as a prayer room for his wife.
Separately from the museum area, on Kirkonmäki (church hill) stands a former grain storehouse completed in 1825, which holds objects from Artjärvi. The storehouse also has an extensive local heritage archive, which is available to researchers by arrangement.
