About the museum

The Orimattila art museum was founded in 1978 and is run by the City of Orimattila. The museum operates on the second floor of the red-brick Cultural Centre in the town centre.

The heart of the museum is the collections of the Taidesäätiö Ilmari ja Toini Wall-Hakala (Ilmari and Toini Wall-Hakala Art Foundation), which were opened to the public in 1978. In total the collection includes more than 170 paintings and drawings, about 60 sculptures and antique furniture, and it focuses on the golden age of Finnish art around the turn of the century. Represented are, among others, Albert Edelfelt, Akseli Gallen-Kallela, Pekka Halonen, Eero Järnefelt, Helene Schjerfbeck, Hugo Simberg and Tove Jansson.

The museum also presents the work of sculptor Pentti Papinaho from three decades, the sculpture ensemble of Essi Renvall and the story of the Erkko brothers, who were born in Orimattila. Changing exhibitions of contemporary art complement the permanent display.
