About the museum
The Porlammin kotiseutumuseo was founded on 1 July 1943, when Elli Marttila-Ahonen proposed at a board meeting of the local youth association that a local heritage museum be founded in Porlammi. The proposal was accepted at once, and the museum’s inauguration celebration was held on 25 July of the same year. The first exhibition space was built in the attic of Soihtula, and objects were collected from villagers’ homes.
Today the museum’s object collections are gathered in four buildings in the Makasiini area, three of which have open exhibition spaces. Over time the area has developed to meet the village’s needs, and it includes the old storehouse (makasiini), the village smithy and a bus garage from the 1930s. Behind the storehouse a former salt pond has been excavated and a campfire site made. The buildings contain machines, furniture, household tools, workshop tools and horse-drawn vehicles.
The museum’s collections include an extensive photo collection, the gem of which is 780 glass negatives: Juho Pessala photographed from the early 1910s until 1955. More than 3,000 photographs have been scanned into digital form. The museum also has two satellite sites: a school museum and the Sirén farm museum.
