About the museum
The Myrskylä local heritage museum was inaugurated on 1 September 1963 and opened to the public the following summer. The museum has been owned by Myrskylä municipality from the start, and its assembly was overseen by a museum committee that was set up for the purpose. The museum was placed in the grain storehouses next to the church on the church hill, a nationally significant cultural environment (RKY): in the middle of the church hill stand a wooden church from 1803 and a bell tower built in 1772.
The grain storehouses served at the time as loan granaries (lainajyvästöt), where landholders deposited grain in good years, and from which grain could be borrowed in years of crop failure in return for interest. The museum's collections include the original grain measures and business papers of the granary. The collection consists largely of everyday objects and tools of the annual cycle, and much of it dates from the 1800s and early 1900s. The museum's oldest object is a Bible from the 1600s.
In 2013, the museum's 50th anniversary year, the building was restored and the permanent exhibition was renewed. The permanent exhibition has rooms from the years of shortage and war and Myrskylä's prehistoric finds, and upstairs visitors can explore former ways of working, such as the journey of grain from field to beer. Since 2017 the museum has held changing small exhibitions.
