About the museum

The Sastamala regional museum was founded on 3 September 1932 as the Tyrvää regional museum, at the founding meeting of the local heritage association. It opened to the public on 6 June 1933 in the Tammisen makasiini (storehouse). In 1958 the museum moved to the stone cowshed of the Tyrvää parsonage, and in spring 2017 it moved to Tornihuvila, a villa built by Pastor Emil Teodor Gestrin in the early 1890s. Tornihuvila belongs to the Kirjakortteli complex together with Herra Hakkarainen’s house and Pukstaavi.

The museum is run by the Suomen kirjainstituutin säätiö (foundation). The collection comprises about 20,000 objects from the 18th century to the present day, which tell mainly of everyday life, housing and livelihoods in the Sastamala region. The museum also has about 15,000 photographs, about 90 linear shelf metres of archive material and a research library of about 10,000 volumes. The museum organises cultural heritage events and maintains the Topoteekki online archive, where local cultural history is published as images, videos, audio and text. The museum has its own museum shop, and the courtyard has a heritage garden.
