About the museum
The Sarkia Museum is the cottage of the weaver Hilda Runni in Kiikka. The poet Kaarlo Sarkia lived there after he was orphaned at the age of 14. He was looked after by Hilda and her mother, Grandma Tilda. Later the cottage was owned by Manda Haavisto, and the Sarkia-Seura (Sarkia Society) bought it in April 1959.
The cottage was restored as a museum under the guidance of Arvo Kytölä of the Finnish Museums Association (Suomen museoliitto). In recent years the Lions Club of Kiikka has restored the old cowshed on the plot. The exhibition includes, among other things, the poet’s typewriter, his mother’s spinning wheel (rukki), a lithograph of Sarkia by Lauri Santu, a plaster sculpture by Anja Aho and photographs of the area.
Near the museum is a statue of Sarkia carved by Kauko Räikkö (Sarkiantie 188), unveiled in 1960, as well as the approximately three-kilometre Sarkia Trail, opened in 1989, along which there are poem boards.
