About the museum
Ilmajoen museo is located on the bank of the Kyrönjoki in central Ilmajoki. It was founded by Finland’s oldest farmers’ association, Ilmajoen Maamiesseura, and the collecting of objects began in 1909. The first museum building, the main museum (päämuseo), was completed in 1914. Its drawings were based on the model of Ilmajoki’s second church, which dates from 1638, and the church-shaped museum building is unique in Finland.
In addition to the main museum, the museum area includes a church museum, which operates in the parish’s former blessing chapel from 1861 and presents the history of Ilmajoki’s three churches. The Aallon patteriston perinnetalo (Aallo Battery heritage farm) tells of the experiences of Ilmajoki gunners in the Winter War and the Continuation War. The yard also contains the Yli-Lauroselan grain barn, the Metsä-Ketelä harakka windmill from 1854 and the Penttilä market barn from the 1750s.
In a separate bank vault is the Lauroselan coin collection, which can be viewed by ordering a presentation.
