About the museum

The Kurikka museum takes visitors from the Stone Age to a 19th-century cottage, to the memories of the former church built in 1672, and to the roots of Kurikka's entrepreneurship. The exhibitions include prehistoric finds, everyday objects of an agricultural community, information about the former church, and local craft traditions such as flax processing and the work of wheelwrights.

The museum also presents the life's work of the folklore collector Professor Samuli Paulaharju (1875–1944) and of the wedding fiddler and accordion maker Sameli Elomaa (1889–1967). The exhibition Aarteita ja karttoja (Treasures and Maps) in the Kotiseututalo (local heritage house) displays metal-detector finds from Kurikka and old maps, and the house also has an exhibition on the wars of 1918 and 1939–1944.

On Museonmäki there are also buildings moved from elsewhere in Kurikka, such as the granary of the old chaplain's parsonage, the Myllykylä central mill, the Harju-Sänttinen granary and the Panttila smithy. The old water tower of Kurikka houses an exhibition on the work of bricklayers, and there is also a summer theatre in the area. The museum is run by Kurikka-Seura.
