About the museum
Röytty is believed to have been built in the late 1600s by men from Taipalsaari, Savitaipale and Joutseno. The first mention of it as a military service farm dates from 1680. Röytty was for a short time the service farm of Swedish army lieutenants, until the whole Taipalsaari area passed to Russia under the Treaty of Turku in 1743; after that the house became a coaching inn. Its location at the junction of the ice road and of water and land transport brought in customers.
The coaching-inn business ended in 1937, and the last master of the house was Viktor Rikkonen. In 1988 the municipality received the property from his nephew Veikko Rikkonen and restored the house as a coaching-inn museum, following the guidelines of the South Karelia Museum and the National Board of Antiquities (Museovirasto). The local heritage house opened to the public in summer 1996. The same farmyard has an outbuilding, and nearby is a grain storehouse of the historic loan granary (lainajyvästö), the Taipalsaari Local Heritage Museum.
