About the museum
The Halikon museo operates in a grain storehouse completed in 1849 near Halikko church. The storehouse was in its day a kind of bank: farmers brought grain there to be stored, and in years of crop failure grain could be borrowed for interest. The building's stone walls, three metres thick, protected the grain. The storehouse was taken into museum use in 1955.
In the three-storey museum visitors get to know the history of Halikko. The first floor presents farming and the farm work done by women, and the workshops of a carpenter, a shoemaker and a tailor from about a hundred years ago. The second floor has an exhibition on the history of the Halikon piirimielisairaala (Halikko District Mental Hospital), which tells of the life of the hospital at Märy through its nursing staff, patients and the building. On the third floor are the school department, a money collection and a weapons collection, which includes swords and sabres donated by Count C. G. Armfelt. The museum is part of the nationally significant built cultural environment of the Halikko church area. It is maintained by the Salo historical museum SAMU.
