About the museum
The idea for the Salon elektroniikkamuseo (Salo Electronics Museum) arose in the early 1990s. In 1994 the city’s cultural department began to collect electronics products, production equipment and archive material, and the largest donors have been private individuals and Salo companies in the field. The collections also acquired the collections of the Mellilä Radio and Telephone Museum, as well as old telephones and televisions from collectors. Nokia Display Products, Nokia’s Salo telephone factory, Benefon and Salcomp have donated many products to the museum.
A permanent exhibition and collection space was obtained in autumn 2011 in the former Saloran TV factory, now the Astrum Centre, where the museum is a tenant. Exhibition activity began at Astrum in 2014 with a radio exhibition, followed by a television exhibition and a telephone and monitor exhibition in 2015 and 2016.
The Made in Salo exhibition complex tells of the development of communication, communication devices and the electronics industry from the late 1920s to the present day. It mainly features devices made in Salo, and the company stories of Salora, Mobira and Nokia are told through texts and audio guides. The museum’s collections include more than 11,000 objects and about 400 metres of literature and archive material in the field. The museum belongs to the sites of the Salon historiallinen museo (SAMU, Salo Historical Museum).
