Meritalon museo

School museum in the old wooden-house district of Moisio in Salo: an early 20th-century classroom, a teacher's family home and a restored garden.

Opening hoursFree admission Partially accessible

About the museum

Meritalo is the former servants' quarters of the Joensuu manor; its oldest part, of the paired-room type, was built in the early 1840s. The building housed the first primary school of Salo, that is, of the former Uskela, from 1873 to 1906. For the school activities, a large hall and a porch were built on the south gable in 1875.

The museum is located near the centre of Salo, in the old wooden-house district of Moisio. It presents an early 20th-century classroom with furniture from the travelling school (kiertokoulu) and the primary school, as well as teaching aids such as a globe, a bead frame and teaching charts. The teacher's family flat contains a study, a bedroom, a kitchen and a hall. Many Finnish school collars (koulukaulukset), school meals and Kallio's arithmetic book, among other things, originated in Salo.

In the museum yard there is a restored museum garden with old oak trees, and in the summer season there is a garden adventure for children. The museum is run by the Salo Historical Museum.
