About the museum
The Salon taidemuseo operates in an engine shed more than 100 years old, which has been extended in several phases over its history. The oldest part of the engine shed was built in 1898–1899 to the drawings of railway architect Knut Nylander. For fire safety, the locomotive maintenance building was built of brick and placed away from the other buildings. The style of the building reflects the ideals of Neo-Renaissance, and many details, such as the hinges of the large outer doors of the stalls and two chimneys, still recall the building’s earlier functions.
The Veturitalli opened as an art museum in 1998. The restored old brick section houses exhibition halls, and the new wing contains offices and work spaces, among other things. In the museum’s inner courtyard, on a turntable, stands a shunting locomotive of the ‘Kana’ type, built at the Tampella works in Tampere in 1921; it was in service until 1970 and was acquired in the year the museum opened.
The museum organises current and varied visual art exhibitions and looks after an art collection of about 2,400 works. More than half of the works are placed in the city’s various facilities, from day-care centres to old people’s homes. The largest deposit collection is the collection of the Taidemaalari Viljo Hurmeen säätiö (Viljo Hurme Painter’s Foundation), which has more than 600 works.
