About the museum
The Heikan Jussi Cobbler's Cottage Museum is a home museum in Herrala, Hollola, which preserves the cottage of the village cobbler Juho Mäkäräinen (1892–1967). Mäkäräinen, known as Heikan Jussi, worked as a cobbler in his cottage and donated it to the Herrala Local Heritage Association on condition that the association look after the cottage as a museum. After Mäkäräinen died in 1967, the cottage passed to the association and became a museum.
The museum gives a lively picture of the modest workshop and home of a village cobbler. At the same time it tells of the life of an exceptional and gifted person in the village community. The village original has been the subject of, among other things, a doctoral thesis, and his correspondence is covered in the book Mökkiläiselämää (Cottager's Life). Books and postcards are sold at the museum.
The museum is maintained by the Herralan Kotiseutuyhdistys ry (Herrala Local Heritage Association), and it is open in summer and by arrangement.
