About the museum
The Kärkölä local heritage museum is located in Huovila Park in the Kärkölä church village, and it is run by the Kärkölä-seura ry association, founded in 1950, through voluntary work. The association has moved buildings to the museum area, looks after the collection, leads guided tours on summer weekends and organises events together with the municipality.
The museum area includes 14 buildings that have been moved to their present sites from elsewhere; apart from the smoke sauna and the cowshed, they come from the Kärkölä area. The main building is the old main building of Maijala, moved from Marttila village, whose oldest parts date from the 18th century. The farmyard has storehouses of different ages, a smoke sauna, a cowshed, a grain storehouse, a threshing barn, a forge and a syytinki cottage, as well as a windlass well and a wind engine. The newest building moved to the museum area is the Veijalainen shop storehouse, brought from Järvelä, whose erection was completed in autumn 2007. The former shop building houses a café in summer.
