About the museum
The building of the Heinola Art Museum was completed in 1830, and it is one of the oldest houses in Heinola. It was designed by the carpenter Jacob Nygrén for the merchant Alexander Toropoff. The house has served as a residential building, a hotel, a school building and a factory, and it has been a museum since 1991. The restoration of the interiors was completed in time for the opening of the summer exhibition on 14 June 2025. The building has Empire-style details, such as decorative window and door frames, original painted ceilings and several tiled stoves.
The permanent displays include the P. J. Hynninen Library, which has about 4,000 volumes, and the European porcelain collections of Spranger and Henry Lönnfors from the 18th to 20th centuries. The museum's own collection is presented in the Heinola Gallery. The Rauno Endén collection includes over 200 works by 56 Finnish artists, including prints, paintings and collages by Harri Kalha.
