About the museum
The Käkisalmi Museum is located in the centre of Heinola on the edge of the market square, along Museokatu. Its permanent basic exhibition tells the history of the Käkisalmi region and Karelia from 1294 to 1944. Visitors can learn about Karelian life through objects, pictures, texts, video presentations and touch screens.
The museum's reading room holds an extensive reference library on the life of Mannerheim, as well as Karelia-themed histories and picture books. The reading room, Käenpesä, also serves as a meeting room for 12 people.
The museum has the Kahvila Käki café, which preserves Karelian hospitality and bakes Karelian treats every day, and the museum shop Käkipuoti. The museum is run by the Käkisalmi Foundation, which together with the Heinola Karelian Society also organises Karelian Week.
