About the museum
The house was built in the 1780s as the home of Lars Adolf Aschan (1741–1809), the kivalteri (county treasurer) of Kymenkartano county. The building’s style combines Rococo and Gustavian elements. The exterior combines the original mansard roof and a façade altered in the 1840s. The interiors are almost entirely from the 18th century, except for the kitchen and the hall: the rooms have Gustavian wallpapers, marbled panels, three-panel Rococo doors and original ceilings and floors.
The house is one of the few surviving 18th-century inland town houses in Finland, and it has been restored close to its original appearance. The courtyard and garden are laid out in the style of the late 18th century, and every summer period-appropriate useful and ornamental plants are grown there. The house displays Gustavian-era furniture and everyday objects, which depict Heinola as the county capital.
