About the museum
The Ronkaala parsonage, built in 1784, served as the childhood home of Kaarlo Juho Ståhlberg (1865–1952). After the children and their mother had moved to Oulu, the Haapajärvi parish sold the vacated parsonage to the municipality in 1898. The building then served, among other uses, as the municipal hall, a post office and the National Welfare Agency (kansanhuoltovirasto) until the end of the wars.
In 1966 local heritage councillor Juha Eronen and journalist Ilmari Luhtasela set up a restoration committee to save the building, which had otherwise been condemned to demolition. The work was supported by a public fundraising campaign under the patronage of President Urho Kekkonen. The childhood home museum received its plot as a gift from the parish, and the museum was opened on 26 July 1969.
The museum includes the parsonage hall, the study of Ståhlberg’s father Johan Gabriel, a bedroom, a parlour, and the kitchen and dining room. Upstairs there is a photo exhibition on K. J. Ståhlberg’s life, as well as a guest room and a servants’ room.
