About the museum

Kallioniemi is the childhood home of Kalle Päätalo, where he lived from 1922 to 1939. Päätalo’s father, Herman Päätalo, bought the Kallioniemi plot of a little over ten hectares in 1922. At the same time he bought a two-room building called the Meijerikamari, dismantled it and floated it to Kallioniemi, where it was reassembled. The cottage, comprising a pirtti (main room) and a kitchen, had a floor area of barely thirty square metres.

In 1931 a new pirtti was built at Kallioniemi, a sauna and a barn had appeared in the yard, and the cowshed had also been renewed. Kallioniemi was lived in permanently until 1970, after which it served as a summer home for the estate of the heirs.

The Taivalkoski municipality bought the plot with its buildings in 1986, and museum activity began there. In 1991 the municipality transferred the site to the Kallioniemi Foundation (Kallioniemi-Säätiö). The museum can be visited in summer, and Kallioniemi also offers a virtual tour and the Seinätön museo (Wall-less Museum) service.
