About the museum

The Posio local heritage museum is located in the village of Lohiranta on the south shore of Lake Kitkajärvi, about 40 km from the centre of Posio. The museum’s main building is the log-built Lohi-Päätalo (main farmhouse), completed in 1895. In the yard there is also a stable building and a small storehouse, which have been moved to the area from elsewhere.

The house is furnished in a folk peasant style, and some of the furniture is original to the house. At its peak, more than 30 people lived on the farm, but it was later divided into smaller parts and the number of residents decreased. The Municipality of Posio bought the house in 1975, and museum activity began there in 1977.

The museum’s collection comprises about 1,150 objects, which were in use in Posio between 1850 and 1940. In summer, events and programmes for children are held in the museum yard.
