About the museum
The Kangasala local heritage museum building is a stone parish granary built in 1833–1835, which was converted into a museum in the 1950s. The museum was opened in 1958. It is owned and run by the local heritage association Kangasala-Seura ry, which was founded in 1949.
The three-storey museum has about 1,700 catalogued objects, which were received as donations from people of the parish. On the first floor are tools and household objects from earlier centuries related to building, hunting, fishing and domestic work. The special features of the second floor are the historical groups, such as Kaarina Maununtytär at Liuksiala manor, Kaarina Hannuntytär at Vääksy manor in the late 16th century, the rusthollari (crown farm-holder) Tavela with his housewife (emäntä), and the 19th-century parsonage room. In addition, visitors can learn about the life of the Stone Age family of Sarsa.
Alongside the basic exhibition, the museum has changing exhibitions on the history of Kangasala. In the museum yard is a rare erratic boulder of ball granite (pallograniitti), which was brought from Haapaniemi in 1967.
