About the museum
Mobilia originated from the car collection of Olavi and Lilja Sallinen. Olavi Sallinen had been collecting museum vehicles since the 1950s and opened his first museum at Vehoniemenharju in Kangasala in 1982. In 1986 the Vehoniemen Automuseosäätiö (Vehoniemi Automuseum Foundation) was established, and it opened a second museum, the Suomen Sotilas- ja erikoisajoneuvohistoriallinen museo (Finnish Military and Special Vehicle History Museum). In 1991 public bodies joined the foundation, and the Tiemuseo (Road Museum) was added to it.
In 1992 the Vehoniemen Automuseo, the Suomen Sotilas- ja erikoisajoneuvohistoriallinen museo and the Tiemuseo adopted the common name Mobilia. In 1994 the museum moved from Vehoniemenharju to new premises at Kisaranta in Kangasala. The Ministry of Education designated it a national special museum for road transport in 1997, and the Ministry of Education and Culture designated it a responsibility museum in 2020.
The museum is maintained by the Mobilia Foundation, which is backed by 29 road transport organisations. The permanent exhibitions are the Rallimuseo (Rally Museum), Kertomuksia teistä (Stories of Roads), which tells the history of the road, the Mobilia classics in Fenno Galleria and, outdoors, Tarinoita siirtotyömailta (Stories from Construction Sites). The museum’s collection hotel stores hundreds of vehicles, from bicycles to road machinery and passenger-car classics.

A ramp leads to the main door of the Keskustalo, and the door opens with a button. There are two accessible parking spaces: one in the Keskustalo car park and one in the Fenno Galleria car park. There is a steep hill between the buildings, which is challenging by wheelchair; visitors arriving by taxi are advised to start at Fenno Galleria. The accessible toilet next to the cloakroom does not suit electric wheelchairs, but there is an accessible toilet meeting current standards near the entrance of the Rallimuseo. The collection spaces and the construction-site barracks are not barrier-free. Guide dogs and assistance dogs are welcome, and the museum is a Vessapassi (toilet pass) venue.
