About the museum
The Karelian Cultural Centre Äijälä is located in Kangasala in a manor-type building next to Liuksiala manor. The house is owned by Kangasala Karjalaseura ry (Kangasala Karelian Association), and its upper floor has been renovated into an exhibition space for the local museum and a storage room for museum objects and collections. Äijälä is a nationally significant venue for presenting Karelian culture, and especially resettled Karelian culture.
The museum collections have been gathered from donations by resettled people. They include objects, books, paintings, handicrafts, maps, photographs, historical documents and national costumes, as well as a library of about 1,200 catalogued works. The collections also include wartime diaries and evacuee stories. Among the museum’s treasures are a 1930s coffee service that was buried in the ground before the Winter War and crystal parts from the ceiling chandelier of Kivennapa church, which was destroyed in the Winter War.
