About the museum
Harjukosken mylly (Harjukoski Mill) is a water mill with two grinding stones on the shore of Lake Kyyvesi, built in the 1870s as the village’s common mill. The mill ground grain for more than a hundred years and was closed in 1975, when operation was no longer profitable.
The mill area includes the mill, a milling room, a forge, two grain storehouses and a cowshed, and in addition there is a mill sauna, where villagers waiting for their grain could spend the night. All the buildings are unlined log buildings with bark-shingle roofs (päreikatto). The grinding stones are natural stone, and the machinery is made entirely of wood.
The mill has kept its original exterior and is regarded as architecturally valuable. In 1982 the film Ulvova mylläri, based on Arto Paasilinna’s novel, was shot in the mill’s cultural landscape. In summer the mill is open to the public, and a guide is present during opening hours. The site belongs to the museums of the City of Mikkeli.
